Useful Information – General Travel Tips

ENJOYING YOUR HOLIDAY
You will be pleased to hear that violent crime is extremely rare in Barbados.  Opportunism is always a possibility so please take necessary care of your personal belongings whilst out and about and use the safe inside your rental property.

On the beach beware the Manchineel trees; the crab apple-like fruit from these trees is poisonous and can blister your skin if you touch it, as can any rain dripping off the tree onto you.  Don’t stand under them to shelter from the rain!  Most of the trees are marked with a red ring around the trunk and some have a warning notice on them.

BUSES
The bus system in Barbados is excellent (although sometimes a bit fast !!).  Fares are a flat rate of BDD$2.50.  Try to have the correct change ready when you board.

TELEPHONES
You will see phone booths all over the island, these can be used for local and international calls, most of the booths take phone cards. (They are available in hotels, post offices plus some shops and supermarkets).

MAIL AND E-MAIL
For those who wish to communicate via e-mail while on holiday Wi-Fi service is widely available.

SHOPPING AND RESTAURANTS
The ‘Best of Barbados’ gift shops dotted around the island sell good quality souvenirs, from books and prints to T-shirts and tableware.

When buying from the duty free shops remember to take your travel documents with you.  Please bear in mind that duty free goods are not always the cheapest.

There are restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets.  Most restaurants automatically add a service charge, so check your bill to ensure you do not pay this twice.  During busy periods, it’s advisable to book a table in the restaurant of your choice beforehand.

Supermarkets are open until approximately 8pm everyday except Sunday, when they close at 2pm.  Some shops are closed on Saturday afternoons.  Petrol stations (e.g. Rubis) all have an extensive range of products for sale; you can obtain most general provisions and they are open 24 hours, 7 days per week.
